Here are the top stories today in Lakewood:
- Red Rocks Community College is tackling food and housing insecurity. The community college has stepped in up in a big way for its students after staff discovered that there were matriculated students that were sleeping in their cars or struggling to buy food. The school has organized a food pantry and is trying to find a way to provide lodging for students who needed it. (Chalkbeat)
- Gains made during the pandemic to end childhood hunger have been lost after federal tax credit expires. Researchers have found that food security significantly decreased when the federal child tax credits expired last January. Researchers also found that those most impacted by the cuts were Black, Hispanic and Indigenous families. (CO Newsline)
- Many of Xcel Energy's customers will see $33 drop in December's bill. Xcel says that some of its Colorado customers will see a decrease in their natural gas bill in December because of a fuel price adjustment. (FOX31)
- Workers are planning strikes at over 100 locations. It's red cup day, and workers in numerous stores across the country are planning to strike as a way to get better pay, more consistent schedules and higher staffing levels in busy stores. Starbucks has long opposed workers unionizing. (KDVR)
