Here are the top stories today in Lakewood:
- Evergreen ice skating tradition faces changes. It's not uncommon for a couple thousand people to skate the lake on busy day. Locals and the growing masses of Denver converge at what is billed as North America's largest, groomed outdoor rink. Locals fear that warming temps may change how the lake is used in the winter. (AP)
- Denver business owner to charge 1% fee to recover shoplifting losses. A downtown business owner says shoplifting at his stores has gotten so bad he's having to charge customers a fee to make up the costs. This isn't the only store that's impacted by theft, as most retailers will agree that shoplifting in their stores is on the rise. (7News)
- Colorado requests $25M in federal aid to help clean up thousands of orphan wells. The US Department of Interior is providing nearly $1.4 billion to states across the U.S. to help clean up abandoned oil and gas wells. Colorado's request comes as officials are working to revise rules that would require oil and gas drillers to provide financial assurance they can plug their wells. (CO Sun)
- Some Colorado parents' child care costs more than half their income. In 2018, a single parent with an infant in Colorado can spend almost 50% of their income on a child care center. A minimum wage worker in Colorado would need to work full time for 32 weeks to pay for care for one infant. (Newsline)
- How did Broomfield become Broomfield? Historians may not know exactly where Broomfield got its name, but they have eliminated less likely explanations – and settled on the broom corn story. (CPR)
From our sponsor:
Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They're chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond "Dry January." We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we've since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.
Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they've extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.
