Skinny Bulldog, Truck On Fire: Lakewood Police Blotter

Jewels stolen from Walmart cart, failed laundromat coin theft, purse snatching victim beaten, shots fired at St. Moritz Apartments and more.

LAKEWOOD, CO -- The following are incident summaries are taken from reports between Nov. 7-13 released by the Lakewood Police Dept.

Skinny bulldog eating trash

An officer was summoned to the 7300 block of W. Jewell Nov. 7 because a neighbor said a dog was eating trash on the side of his house and appeared to be malnourished.

“Tank” the eight-year-old brown and white American Bulldog, who looked thin, according to reports, was tethered to a driveway when the officer arrived. The owner said the dog had lost weight, but she hadn’t had time to take it to the veterinarian. The owner agreed to visit the vet within 10 days, when the officer would check up. No charges were filed.

Expensive jewels and purse swiped at the Walmart

A woman reported she left her purse in the cart when she loaded groceries at Walmart at 440 Wadsworth Blvd. Nov. 7. When she returned, the purse was gone. She told police the purse contained jewelry worth $2,500. No arrest was made.

Not the pricey Mercedes wheels

Thieves made off with wheels of a 2013 Mercedes SUV parked in the 300 block of South Vance Street. Responding officers Nov. 7 around 4:30 p.m. observed the SUV was resting at an angle because the two passenger side tires and wheels had been removed, leaving the vehicle resting on the brake rotors. The vehicle owner guessed thieves might have mistakenly believed his SUV had expensive Mercedes AMG wheels worth $2,500 each. However, he had recently swapped to his winter tires and wheels from Discount Tire and worth about $200 each, plus $200 each for the tires. The total loss was reported at $800.

Burglar wannabe thwarted by laundromat’s coin machine

Officers responded to a burglar alarm Nov. 9 around 3 a.m. at Coin Laundry, in the 6400 block of West Colfax Avenue. They discovered the glass door smashed. Closed circuit TV showed a white male at 2:45 a.m. wearing a black ski mask smashing the door with a sack containing unknown heavy materials. He then entered the laundromat and swung the sack numerous times against what was described as the “secret stash” coin machine. Unable to break into the coin machine, the man left in an unknown direction, officers reported. Damage to the door was valued at $800.

Women beaten and purse stolen

A 20-year-old woman told police she was beaten, kicked and her purse was stolen by two men in hoodies who attacked her as she walked home from the Sheridan Blvd. RTD station. She said observed two black males leaning against a wall, but “didn’t really take notice of them because she was looking at her phone” as she walked north of the light rail station stairs in the alley between Ames Street and Sheridan Boulevard and West 12th Avenue. The two men walked up and began punching her without saying anything, she said. She told officers she fell to the ground, clutching her purse and trying to protect her face from punches. The men also kicked her back while she was on the ground, she said. The men took her pink Coach purse containing a wallet with $100, two $50.00 money orders, a cheetah print makeup bag containing about $100.00 in makeup and maternity pictures of her little sister. She was treated for cuts and lacerations at a hospital and released.

Report of shots fired at St. Moritz Apartments

Officers responded to several calls reporting shots fired Nov. 9 around 9:24 at the St. Moritz apartment complex in the 11100 block of West 17th Avenue. Witnesses said they heard between six and seven shots fired and some said they saw several unknown males running through the apartment complex and heard them speed off in more than one car. Officers found several 9 mm shell casings south of West 18th Ave and Quail Street. With no victim found, officers made no further inquiries.

Motor vehicle arson

A “fully engulfed” white Chevy pickup was reported to be on fire in the 5700 block of Louisiana around 2:20 a.m. Nov. 13. Witnesses told police they saw two males running from the vehicle. The truck was determined to be stolen from Denver, police said. Fire crews suspected it was intentionally set ablaze, according to police reports.

The following addresses reported burglaries in Lakewood:

Nov. 7:

  • 10200 block of West 26th Avenue: Forced-entry burglary. Total estimated loss was $650.

Nov. 8

  • 2300 block of South Fenton Drive: Non-forced-entry burglary. Total estimated loss was $8,947.
  • 400 block of Zang Street. Non-forced-entry burglary. Total estimated loss was $1,736.
  • 8000 block of West 12th Avenue: Non-forced-entry burglary. Total estimated loss was $60.
  • 7800 block of West Mexico Place: Non-forced-entry burglary. Total estimated loss was not given.

Nov. 9

  • 10600 block of West 7th Avenue: Non-forced-entry burglary. Total estimated loss was $565.
  • 600 block of Cody Court: Forced-entry burglary. Total estimated loss was not given.
  • 1000 block of South Reed Street: Non-forced-entry burglary. Total estimated loss was not given.

These incidents represent a portion of the police calls that took place on the specified dates. Under the Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act, departments have discretion in releasing police incident reports. Because some reports are for alleged felonies, they are still under investigation and no more information can be released, according to Lakewood spokesman Steve Davis.
