TABOR Proposal To Appear On Jeffco Ballots

The Jeffco Board of County Commissioners voted 3-0 this week to authorize a public vote on the proposal.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, CO — Voters In Jefferson County will decide the fate of a Taxpayer Bill of Rights proposal in the November elections this year. The Jeffco Board of County Commissioners voted 3-0 Tuesday to authorize a public vote on whether the county can keep taxes, grants and all other revenue that it collects in excess of limits instituted from the TABOR and other applicable state statutes.

The county will need to cut $16.1 million over the next year to balance its budget and maintain an appropriate reserve fund, officials said. The county is requiring budget reductions in 2020 across all offices, departments and divisions that are impacted by the general fund, which is financed by property taxes.

The new ballot question will allow voters to decide whether to allow the county to keep up to $16.1 million in 2020, and additional excess revenue between 2021 and 2027 — which would otherwise be refunded to property owners under TABOR.
