1 Hospitalized After Hazmat Leak In Littleton High School

LITTLETON, CO — A person was hospitalized Thursday night after a chemical leak in Littleton High School. The patient suffered injuries that weren't life-threatening, fire officials said.

There was a release of a mixture of chlorine, gas and muriatic acid in the control room of the pool, according to South Metro Fire Rescue. Firefighters evacuated the building, shut down the HVAC system and blocked off the pool.

"Firefighters mitigated the hazard & are working on ventilation inside the pool area," South Metro Fire Rescue said in a tweet posted around 10 p.m.

"The leak has not reached other areas in the school at this time. Crews are monitoring levels to make sure it stays that way after ventilation."

A custodial crew was inside the school when firefighters were called to the building around 9 p.m.

South Metro Fire Rescue was working with a building engineer to see if there was a system to ventilate the pool area or if other means of ventilation was needed.

A decontamination area was set up for crews to leave the building safely, fire officials said.
