Auto-Train Wreck In Douglas County Kills Two

Two passengers died south of Highlands Ranch when their car was struck by a freight train traveling around 40 mph.

HIGHLANDS RANCH, CO -- Two passengers in a car will killed Tuesday when a freight train struck their vehicle south of Highlands Ranch.

The Douglas County Sheriff's department said the accident happened near Highway 85 just south of Ron King Trail. A Santa Fe railroad freight train struck the white sedan around 12:30 p.m. in the 8500 block of U.S. 85, according to South Metro Fire Rescue.

The car was on a road that leads to an auto salvage yard and was heading toward Highway 85, Douglas County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Steve Johnson told reporters.

The train was traveling around 40 miles per hour, Johnson said.

The names, ages and genders of the people in the car were not immediately released.
