Family, And Their Cats, Saved By Littleton Fire Rescue

Three family members escaped an early morning blaze in the basement of their home, thanks to smoke alarms, fire officials said.

HIGHLANDS RANCH – Three family members and two cats made it out of a Highlands Ranch home that caught fire early Tuesday morning. Firefighters credited smoke detectors for the family's ability to escape the blaze.

The 911 call came in around 1:20 a.m., according to a South Metro Fire Rescue spokesman. The blaze started in the basement, investigators said.

Littleton Fire Department crews were on the scene at 532 Northridge Rd. to help family members evacuate. Firefighters administered oxygen to the family pets, who were then taken by Douglas County sheriff's officers to an animal emergency veterinarian. The fate of the cats was unknown Tuesday morning.
