Littleton To Hold 2nd Reading On Mayoral Election Ballot Question
Littleton's mayor is elected by council, but should voters make that decision directly? A public hearing will be held Tuesday evening.

LITTLETON, CO — A second reading will be held Tuesday on a proposed ballot question for Littleton voters Nov. 3 — should voters be able to directly elect their mayor? Among Colorado's largest cities, only Littleton, Englewood and Grand Junction's mayors are elected by their councils.
The ballot question would also ask Littleton voters if all council terms should be four years. The mayor is elected by council every two years from among the seated members. Every two years in the at-large race, the candidate who receives the highest number of votes serves a four-year term, and the candidate who receives the second-highest number of votes serves a two-year term. If council approves the ordinance on second reading and voters pass the ballot question, the two-year, at-large candidate's position would be discontinued to allow for the mayor to be directly elected by the voters and keep city council comprised of seven members.
A directly-elected mayor would have no more power than a council-elected mayor.
