LITTLETON, CO — The City of Littleton has announced the cancellation of the Littleton Twilight Criterium 2020 amid the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The decision was made after "considerable" discussion with USA Crits, the criterium race director, sponsors and staff, the city said.

The popular event was in its 8th year and has been held in Downtown Littleton on the first Saturday in August since 2013.

"We are very disappointed to have to cancel this year’s event," Littleton Marketing and Events Manager Elizabeth Scofield said in a public announcement.

"Based on surveys conducted by USA Crits, up to 30% of racers aren’t comfortable competing this year. With no end in sight to the virus, social distancing protocols, and public health orders that prevent large gatherings of people, this is the only choice we could make at this time. We plan to come back bigger and better in 2021."

The event, which is part of USA Cycling's National Calendar and the top-level USA Crit Series, features some of the nation's top cyclists competing on a short, closed-circuit course.

The cancellation is another blow to Littleton businesses, which see a surge in customers each year during the criterium. The annual event includes bands, a beer garden, games and a cruiser ride.
