Shots Fired Report Puts JeffCo Schools On Lockout Status

WATCH: JeffCo sheriff releases video in which at least 24 shots are heard and a person gets into a car and backs away.

LITTLETON, CO -- The JeffCo sheriff's department finally gave the all-clear for residents and business owners to leave their safety spots after a shots fired report near the Safeway at 7800 block of Shaffer Parkway closed roads and put local schools on a lockout status.

Law enforcement officers responded to the grocery store around 6:40 a.m., closing several roads near the shopping complex. West Ken Caryl Avenue was closed between Alkire Place and C-470, and Shaffer Drive was also closed.

A 56-second video taken by a witness released by the sheriff's office shows a meadow behind a parking structure. About 24 shots are heard on the audio. A person gets into a silver sedan in the top upper left of the video and backs out of the frame.

The lockout status of most JeffCo schools was lifted at 9:45 a.m. except for Ute Meadows Elementary School and Chatfield High School, Jefferson County School District reported, after an early morning report of shots fired brought police and sheriff deputies to the area and closed roads.

The JeffCo sheriff's office asked people in the area to remain inside their homes, just as many people were getting ready to go to work.

Families from JeffCo schools south of Hwy. 285 were initially told to delay bringing children to school. Schools affected were Bradford schools, Chatfield, Collegiate Academy, Falcon Bluffs, Mortensen and Shaffer and Ute Meadows. The lockout status means nobody is allowed to go in or out of the school.

"Please do not come to the school to try to pick your student up," JeffCo messaged to parents.
