The 10 Most Dangerous Cities In Connecticut: 2020 Rankings
New data shows the 10 most dangerous communities in Connecticut for 2020. Are you surprised by which places made the list?
CONNECTICUT — We love to post and share stories about our state's safest communities, but we don't pay much attention to our most dangerous ones. Or maybe we do, and then turn away.
RoadSnacks, a website that analyzes cities and states using various data, recently released its newest ranking of the state's most dangerous cities — an assessment created using violent crimes and property crimes in cities with a population of 7,000 or more. There are 93 municipalities that match that criterion in Connecticut.
Connecticut is the 15th wealthiest state in the nation, so expectations regarding safety may be higher here than in other areas. Admirably, our crime numbers have been dropping at an impressive rate. Total violent crime in the Nutmeg State fell by ten percent, one of the steepest drops in the country. But the plunge has not been across the board: Bridgeport recorded the highest numbers of property crimes and violent crimes in the state's history.

- Violent Crimes Per 100k: (5th most dangerous)
- Property Crimes Per 100k: (1st most dangerous)
You haven't imagined it: Waterbury has seen a rise in crime, compared to the previous year's reckoning. Residents of "The Brass City" now face a 1 in 25.5 chance of being the victim of a property crime, a number twice as bad as the state's average.
4. New Britain
- Rank Last Year: 4 (No change)
- Violent Crimes Per 100k: (6th most dangerous)
- Property Crimes Per 100k: (7th most dangerous)
Although it's rank in the survey is unchanged from the previous year, citizens of New Britain have seen both violent and property crime dropping at a rapid pace.
5. Plainville
- Rank Last Year: 6 (Up 1)
- Violent Crimes Per 100k: (16th most dangerous)
- Property Crimes Per 100k: (6th most dangerous)

6. Bloomfield
- Rank Last Year: 11 (Up 5)
- Violent Crimes Per 100k: (12th most dangerous)
- Property Crimes Per 100k: (10th most dangerous)

7. Derby
- Rank Last Year: 9 (Up 2)
- Violent Crimes Per 100k: (9th most dangerous)
- Property Crimes Per 100k: (16th most dangerous)
Like Waterbury, Derby's crime stats have been trending in the wrong direction. Violent crime went up from 2017-2018, and property crime is also climbing.

Violent Crimes Per 100k: (4th most dangerous)
Property Crimes Per 100k: (22nd most dangerous)
New London's violent crime rate is just behind that of Hartford. One out of 221 residents are the victims of violence, a rate that is four times the state average.

- Violent Crimes Per 100k: (22nd most dangerous)
- Property Crimes Per 100k: (5th most dangerous)
Property crime has dropped of late in East Windsor, but there has not been much let-up in the rate of violent crime.
10. East Hartford
Rank Last Year: 10 (No Change)
Violent Crimes Per 100k: (15th most dangerous)
Property Crimes Per 100k: (13th most dangerous)
