One suspect was fatally shot, while a second suspect was shot and is currently at a hospital, police said. His condition is unknown. State police said this is an "isolated incident" and there is no threat to the community. The identities of the two suspects has not yet been released.

Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould said the two officers shot and killed are: Sgt. Dustin Demonte, 35, who is a school resource officer, and he is survived by his wife, Laura, two children, and he had another baby on the way, and Officer Alex Hamzy, 34, who grew up in town, and he is survived by his wife, Katie. Officer Alec Iurato, 26, who was hired in 2018, was seriously injured in the shooting. Iurato received a letter of commendation in 2021 and was named officer of the month for his role in preventing a suicide attempt, the Bristol Press reported.

Gould said the officers are all "heroes" and "words cannot express the sadness and grief that brings me before you this morning." He said the department and community "lost 2 exceptional police officers," who are all "wonderful, brave individuals."

He said, "our community have been rocked, our police department has been rocked." He said thoughts and prayers are needed, but he vowed that the police department "will get through this horrific event."

WFSB 3 TV reported that the area was close to ESPN and residents described "hearing the gunshots like ‘pop pop pop pop pop pop’ up and stop, and then stop for maybe 30 seconds and then another round ‘pop pop pop pop pop’ and then it just stopped. "

At 7 a.m., a procession occurred where the two Bristol officers who were killed were escorted from Bristol Hospital to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington.

Gov. Ned Lamont said in a statement that, "I am directing flags in Connecticut lowered to half-staff effective immediately in honor of two @BristolCTPolice officers who were killed in the line of duty late last night while responding to an emergency call of domestic violence at a private residence in the town.

"This is a senseless tragedy, and my prayers are with their families, loved ones, and fellow officers," Lamont said. "I also ask the residents of CT to keep in their prayers a third officer who was shot and is currently in the hospital with serious injuries.

"This is a devastating reminder of the dangers that police officers face every day to protect our families and neighbors from all kinds of situations. This continues to be an active situation, and I’ve directed DESPP Commissioner James Rovella and the @CT_STATE_POLICE to support @BristolCTPolice and the greater community in every way they can. These officers are heroes and will always be remembered for the honorable service they provided to their town and state," Lamont said.
