2 Dead Pit Bulls Dumped By Wolcott Walking Trail: PD

WOLCOTT, CT — Two deceased pit bulls were found dumped in garbage bags near a local walking trail over the weekend, according to police.

Police on Saturday received a report of two garbage bags emitting a foul odor. Officers responded to the scene, opened the bags and discovered the dead dogs, police said.

The trail is in the area of Woodtick Road and Boundline Road.

The animals are being taken to the University of Connecticut’s Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science in Storrs for necropsies to help determine the cause of their deaths, police said.

Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates is paying for the necropsies.

The animal advocacy organization is also offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of whoever is responsible.

On Tuesday, police said an investigation is ongoing.

“These dogs deserve justice, and someone knows what happened to them,” police said, in a Facebook post. “Even the smallest piece of information could help investigators identify the person responsible.”

Zilla Cannamela, president of Desmond’s Army, said she hopes the organization’s reward will bring tips and bring someone to justice.

“This is shocking and horrific,” she said. “I am speechless that this has happened again in the same place.”

A dead, emaciated dog was found near the same trail back in January, and animal control officials named that dog “Winter.” In that case, a Waterbury man was charged with animal cruelty and is next due back in court in September.

“These dogs (found over the weekend) were emaciated too,” Cannamela said. “I hope someone knows something and comes forward.”

UPDATE: On Thursday, Wolcott police announced a community member has agreed to contribute an additional $1,000, which brings the total reward for information to $6,000.

“The outpouring of concern and support for these dogs has been tremendous,” police said, in an announcement on Facebook. “We sincerely thank this individual for stepping forward and adding to the reward, and we thank everyone who has shared the information and helped keep attention on this investigation.”
