Heat, humidity and wildfire smoke are impacting the state, according to meteorologists.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for southern Connecticut today due to the high heat and humidity.

A heat advisory remains in effect for the southern part of the state through 9 p.m. Wednesday. For northern Connecticut, it expires at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

While high temperatures today will be in the 90s, it will feel even hotter due to the humidity. Heat index values could make it feel like it is 101 degrees, resulting in potential heat-related illnesses, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents are urged to stay in air conditioning, drink plenty of fluids, and check on relatives and neighbors. If working outdoors, take frequent breaks and seek out shade and air conditioning when possible, the National Weather Service advises.

WFSB reports both today and Wednesday are “First Alert Weather Days” due to the “dangerous combo of heat and humidity.”

WFSB predicts heat index values will be as high as 105.

“Fortunately, it will be breezy both days which will provide at least some relief for those spending time outside,” WFSB reports. “Compared to what we endured leading up to the 4th of July... this round of heat won’t be as intense, and the humidity won’t be as oppressive.”

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is causing hazy skies today, according to WFSB, though it doesn’t predict any impact on Connecticut’s air quality today.

An air quality alert is in effect through 11 p.m. for southern Connecticut, but that is due to ground level ozone.

“Tomorrow, another plume of thick smoke is forecast to arrive and it will not only be aloft but near the surface and the air quality may be impacted,” WFSB reports.

Isolated storms are possible due to the passage of a cold front on Wednesday, according to WFSB, which anticipates a drop in humidity and temperatures starting on Thursday.
