Fatal wrong-way accident investigated, CT State Police
In less than a month, seven Connecticut residents have been killed in three separate wrong-way fatal crashes.
State Police said Walter Turner, 43, of Spruce Brook Road in Berlin, died in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 84 westbound, east of Exit 33 in Plainville on Wednesday afternoon.
State Police said a vehicle was traveling on I-84 in the left lane of three and Turner was traveling the wrong-way on I-84, traveling east in the westbound lanes, also in the left lane.
Turner's 2006 Ford Focus "struck Vehicle 1 head-on," State Police said in an accident summary. "Vehicle 1 came to uncontrolled final rest in the left and center lane, prior to Exit 33. Vehicle 2 came to uncontrolled final rest across the left shoulder and left lane of the highway. Operator 1 was transported to New Britain Hospital for the treatment of possible minor injuries. Operator 2 (Turner) sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision and was pronounced deceased on scene."
Both vehicles were towed due to damage. This case remains under investigation.
Any witness to the collision is asked to contact TPR Michael Dean # 0416, at Troop H, at 860.534.1098 or through email at michael.dean@ct.gov. Furthermore, if you have a vehicle equipped with a dashcam, and you were driving through the area at the time of the collision, you are also asked to contact Dean, State Police said.
In late February, four people were killed in a wrong-way crash in Hartford on I-84. And also in late February, two people were killed in a wrong-way crash in Meriden.
Outdoor dining approval extended in CT
On Wednesday, the State Senate unanimously passed House Bill 5271, An Act Concerning the Provision of Outdoor Food and Beverage Services and Outdoor Displays of Goods, granting the bill final passage and sending it to the Governor’s desk for signature. The bill extends existing state provisions through April 2023.
“Our industry is grateful that the General Assembly has acted on this bill in a bipartisan manner, and we look forward to the Governor’s signature as he has been a strong advocate for expanded outdoor dining in Connecticut,” said Scott Dolch, President and CEO of the Connecticut Restaurant Association. “This is a timely and much-needed measure that will help Connecticut’s restaurant industry as it continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, our state and its elected leaders are showing that we must continue to rally around our state’s many local restaurants, the vast majority of which are small businesses.”
Coronavirus update
The infection rate is now at 3.25 percent, and the number of COVID-19 related hospitalizations dropped by one bed to 99.
