Bristol Police Seek Witnesses To Garbage Truck Crash

BRISTOL, CT — The commercial garbage truck which crashed into a local river on Friday belongs to a Connecticut-based company, according to police, who are asking any witnesses to come forward.

Lt. Patrick Krajewski said the truck is owned by All American Waste.

The accident happened on Friday, Sept. 4 shortly before noon. The truck was traveling northbound on Willis Street when it failed to stop at the intersection of South Street. It then continued through the parking lot of the Bristol Arts and Innovation Magnet School. It crossed Memorial Boulevard before landing in the Pequabuck River.

Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu posted on Facebook that the truck “lost brakes” on Willis Street, then ended up in the river.

Its two occupants had serious injuries and were transported to an area hospital for treatment. According to Zoppo-Sassu, one suffered a serious arm injury and the other suffered smoke inhalation and burns.

Krajewski said he did not have an update on the occupants’ conditions or whether they are still hospitalized.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for information.

William Flood, a spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, which responded to the scene, said Wednesday there was no contamination of the Pequabuck River.

The Bristol Police Traffic Division’s investigation into the accident is ongoing, and police are hoping any witnesses will come forward.
