Connecticut High School Is 2nd Most Expensive In America: New Report

Is $70,000 a year too much to pay for your child's high school tuition?

CONNECTICUT — A Litchfield County school is the second most expensive high school in the country, according to personal finance website GoBankingRates.com.

One year's boarding tuition at Kent School, in Kent, will set you back $69,950. Commuter families pay $52,000 annually.

For some perspective, the annual cost of private elementary school averages $12,350 per student and $16,040 for a high schooler in the United States, according to the Education Data Initiative.

Kent School's current enrollment is 520 students, hailing from 29 states and 31 countries. Only 7 percent of the student body commutes, the remainder are boarders. 40 percent of the student population receives financial aid, according to the Kent School website.

Most Kent sports teams compete in the Founders League, comprised of teams from the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council. The Kent Lions play football in the Housatonic Valley League, where they have taken home seven league championships and two New England Championships in the past 17 years.

Kent is a perennial powerhouse in rowing, and this year, the boys squash squad won the U.S. High School Squash Championship. All told, the school fields 50 teams in 22 sports.

You won't be surprised that equestrian sports are huge at Kent, which boasts extensive riding facilities that allow students to ride year-round in a range of settings. Those include ten miles of cross-country trails and a heated indoor arena.

Among the school's more famous alumni are songstress Lana Del Rey, '03; "Family Guy" and "The Orville" creator Seth MacFarlane, '91; and actor and activist Ted Danson, '66.

At the top of GoBankingRate's priciest high schools is The Lawrenceville School, and the race is not even close. Tuition at the Lawrenceville, New Jersey school is $73,220, over $3,200 above Kent's ticket price.

Along with the price of tuition, one other difference between the two schools that quickly stands out is the acceptance rate. Kent enrolls 42 percent of the students who apply, according to Private School Review; Lawrenceville is considerably more picky, at just 16 percent. The nationwide acceptance rate at private high schools is 85 percent.
