CONNECTICUT — There have been 1,884 confirmed deaths among nursing home residents attributed to the coronavirus in Connecticut, according to the latest weekly update released Thursday by Gov. Across the state's assisted living facilities, the COVID-19 death toll is 240, nine more than reported the previous week. The death of another 87 residents was likely due to the virus, according to the governor's report.

The total number of confirmed positive coronavirus cases in the state's nursing home communities is 8,322 residents, up 447 from last week. There are 1,007 confirmed cases of the virus among assisted living facility residents, an increase of 34 cases over the previous week's report.

The cumulative number of deaths among nursing home residents is based upon data reported by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. For public health surveillance, COVID-19-associated deaths include persons who tested positive for COVID-19 around the time of death (laboratory-confirmed) and persons whose death certificate lists COVID-19 disease as a cause of death or a significant condition contributing to death (probable). The cumulative number of residents with confirmed COVID-19 is obtained from data reported by individual assisted living facilities to the Long Term Care Mutual Aid Plan web-based reporting system.

"This week’s nursing home and assisted living weekly statistical report continues to show that areas of high population density and COVID-19 presence, like Connecticut, will see a corresponding prevalence of COVID-19 in congregate settings, such as nursing home and assisted living communities," Mag Morelli, president of LeadingAge Connecticut; Matt Barrett, president and CEO the Connecticut Association of Health Care Facilities; and Christopher Carter, president of CConnecticut Assisted Living Association, said in a news release.

"This week’s statistics and the results of our testing also reflect the highly contagious character of the virus, which has confused and challenged medical and academic experts, as well as public health officials across the Nation. We have continuously modified the normal infection control concepts as we learn more about the disease, and we are cautiously optimistic as we witness more and more residents recovering."
