CT Child Tax Rebate: 5 Things To Know

Connecticut taxpayers with dependent children can receive a tax rebate, but they must apply. Here are five things to know about the program.

CONNECTICUT — Eligible Connecticut taxpayers with dependent children have until July 31 to apply for up to $750 in child tax rebates.

The program has several important differences from the federal advanced child tax credit that was part of the American Rescue Plan Act. Most importantly, the program isn’t a tax credit, so eligible people need to apply by July 31 to get the money.

Single or married filing separately taxpayers are eligible for the full amount if their income was $100,000 or less on their 2021 federal tax return. The married filing jointly amount is $200,000 and head of household is $160,000. Those who make more than those amounts may be eligible for a prorated amount.

Do I need to apply? Why isn’t the rebate automatic like the federal child tax credit advance payment?

The only way to receive the rebate is to apply online, according to DRS. The rebate isn’t a tax credit and can’t be claimed on Connecticut tax returns. The deadline is July 31.

The state Department of Revenue Services doesn’t collect information that would allow for automatic rebate payments, Commissioner Mark Boughton said at a news conference.

DRS plans to ask for the needed information when people file their 2022 tax year returns next year, he said.

When and how will rebates be sent out?

Rebates will be sent out in late August as a check in the mail, according to DRS.

Where do I apply?

Eligible people can apply on the DRS website. No paper applications are being accepted.

What information do I need to apply?

Applicants will need information from their 2021 federal tax returns, including their federal adjusted gross income amount, filing status and dependent identifying information, including social security numbers.
