CT Highest Paid State Employees 2021: See The Top 100

The top three spots were held by UConn coaches, according to data from the Office of the State Comptroller.

CONNECTICUT — University of Connecticut men’s basketball head coach Dan Hurley topped the list of highest-compensated state employees in 2021 with $3.6 million in total compensation.

Hurley was followed by UConn women’s head basketball coach Geno Auriemma, who made about $2.6 million. Former UConn men’s football coach Randy Edsall came in third with $1.39 million in compensation. Payments for Hurley and Edsall were spread across multiple payment types.

The top 50 highest-paid state employees across the U.S. are all college coaches, according to AL.com. A few years ago some university directors and other state employees made the list. University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban led with $9.75 million in compensation, followed by University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari at $9.3 million.

UConn Health Center employees made up about 60 of the top 100 highest-paid state employees. The state Department of Mental Health And Addiction Services had about 20 of the top 100 spots.

UConn had the largest payroll out of any state agency at $613 million. It was followed by the Department of Correction at $485 million and UConn Health Center at $469 million.
