Winter Weather Advisory Issued For 4 CT Counties: New Details, Timeline Released

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for 4 counties in CT and a hazardous weather outlook for 4 more.

CONNECTICUT — A winter weather advisory has been issued for Hartford, Tolland, Windham, and Litchfield counties beginning Friday night and continuing for most of Saturday.

Areas here may see anywhere between 2-6 inches of snow and ice accumulation, according to the National Weather Service. Interior sections of southern Connecticut may see up to two inches of snow and ice accumulation, the weather service said. And towns along the immediate coast may see a minor accumulation of snow and ice, the weather service said. Along the coast, flooding is a concern as strong wind gusts are forecast. A flood watch and advisory has been issued for the coast.

As for the timing, it appears the precipitation holds off until after the evening commute Friday. Snow is forecast to begin for everyone, and there will be a transition in the overnight hours to sleet and rain on Saturday morning.

***Coastal towns of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties forecast details

A coastal flood warning is in effect for coastal sections of Fairfield and New Haven counties from 6 a.m. until noon Saturday. A coastal flood warning is in effect from 5 a.m. to noon Saturday for coastal sections of Middlesex and New London counties.

Coastal sections of New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties: A wind advisory is in effect from midnight until 6 a.m. Saturday. East winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.


***Interior sections of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties: In a hazardous weather outlook, the weather service said, "A wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain is expected tonight into Saturday morning. There is also potential for a few pockets or localized areas of freezing rain. Snow accumulations forecast are generally 1 to 2 inches...There will be potential for slippery travel on untreated roadways for any areas that have temperatures drop to at or below freezing."


***Hartford/Tolland/Windham County: A winter weather advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 7 p.m. Saturday. "Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches, highest amounts near the Mass Pike and west of Route 128...Snow develops from west to east between 8 pm and midnight, and changes to sleet then rain. Pockets of freezing rain possible near the Mass Pike. Rain may change to a period of snow Saturday afternoon before ending."


***Litchfield County: A winter weather advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Friday until 7 p.m. Saturday. "Snow and sleet precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph across the higher elevations...An initial period of snow tonight will mix with and then change over to sleet overnight. Some rain may also mix in towards Saturday morning."
