CT's 5th District GOP Primary: What To Know About The Candidates

Republican voters in Connecticut's 5th Congressional District will choose between Chris Shea and Jonathan De Barros in the Aug. 11 primary.

The winner will advance to face Democratic U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes in the November general election.

The 5th Congressional District includes parts of western and central Connecticut, including Danbury, Waterbury and New Britain.

Shea, the Republican Party-endorsed candidate, is a Cheshire resident, retired Navy SEAL, lieutenant with the North Haven Fire Department and founder of Hero to Hero, a nonprofit that helps military veterans transition into careers as first responders.

According to his campaign, Shea's priorities include putting Connecticut residents first, preventing illegal immigration, addressing crime and drugs, lowering the cost of living and supporting veterans.

De Barros, of Plymouth, is the founder of the Phoenix Youth Foundation, a nonprofit that mentors at-risk youth, promotes vocational training and teaches conflict resolution. He has worked as an electrical technician.

His priorities include addressing the cost of living, championing small businesses and supporting law enforcement, according to his campaign.

The Republican primary follows a contentious campaign between the two candidates. De Barros has challenged the party establishment throughout the race and has filed a defamation lawsuit against four Republicans he said referred to him as "a murderer."

Early in-person voting runs from Aug. 3 through Aug. 9. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Primary Day, Aug. 11.

Only registered Republicans in the 5th District may vote in the Republican primary. The winner will face Hayes in the Nov. 3 general election.
