Gas Prices Surge In Connecticut As National Average Tops $4
Gas prices continue to increase in Connecticut and the nation amid global supply disruptions.
Gas prices are climbing rapidly across Connecticut as the national average has crossed the $4 mark for the first time in more than three years.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the U.S. reached $4.01 on Tuesday, according to AAA Northeast. That’s the first time prices have hit $4 since August 2022.
In Connecticut, drivers are now paying an average of $3.95 per gallon — up 3 cents from last week and more than $1 higher than a month ago.

The sharp increase follows a period of relatively stable prices earlier this year, when the national average sat at $2.98 in late February.
Since then, prices have surged alongside rising oil costs, which have increased by about $40 per barrel in recent weeks.

What’s driving the spike?
Much of the increase is tied to disruptions in global oil supply linked to the ongoing war involving Iran, which has impacted production and shipping routes in the Middle East.
According to AAA, damage to oil and gas infrastructure and reduced shipments through key routes have tightened supply worldwide, pushing prices higher.
Seasonal factors are also playing a role.
Gas prices typically rise in the spring as demand increases and more expensive summer-blend gasoline enters the market.
How Connecticut compares
While Connecticut’s average remains just below $4, it is in line with neighboring states across the Northeast:
- New York: $3.94
- New Jersey: $3.92
- Massachusetts: $3.81
- Rhode Island: $3.86
All states have seen significant increases over the past month.
Gas prices previously exceeded $4 in 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, reaching a record national average of $5.01 per gallon in June of that year.
How drivers can save
With prices rising, AAA recommends drivers take steps to reduce fuel costs, including:
- Shopping around for the lowest prices
- Keeping tires properly inflated
- Avoiding excessive speed
- Removing unnecessary weight from vehicles
- Using rewards programs or discounts when available
Prices are expected to remain volatile in the coming weeks as global supply concerns continue.
