COVID-19 Infection Rate, Hospitalizations Rise Again: Town-By-Town Updates

The 7-day rolling average for the Connecticut's COVID-19 positivity rate has climbed above 7 percent. Here are the town-by-town updates.

CONNECTICUT, CT — The state COVID-19 test positivity rate continues to trend upward.

The 7-day rolling average released by the state Department of Public Health on Tuesday was 7.35 percent, up from the 6.51 percent average reported on Friday.

There are 150 residents hospitalized with COVID-19, up 37 beds over the past week. Of those patients currently hospitalized, 96, or 64 percent, are fully vaccinated.

The latest estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show the omicron subvariant BA.2 responsible for 85.9 percent of all COVID infections in the United States over the past week. In New England, the so-called "stealth" subvariant has dug in even more: the CDC says that 90.3 percent of cases can trace their source to BA.2

Some Northeast states, such as Rhode Island and New Hampshire, saw their average of daily new cases rise more than double in two weeks, according to Johns Hopkins data. As of Thursday, the highest rates of new coronavirus cases per capita over the past 14 days were in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Vermont and Alaska.

Coronavirus cases were on the decline since the end of January, and have been steadily rising over the past few weeks. As the subvariant gooses positive cases higher, some institutions, public and private in the state, have begun to revisit pandemic mitigation strategies. The University of Connecticut in Storrs has reinstated its mask mandate through the end of the school year.
