Life-Threatening Injuries Reported In Head-On Crash In Harwinton

HARWINTON, CT — Three people were injured in a head-on crash in Harwinton on Monday, according to fire officials.

Firefighters were dispatched to Litchfield Road (Route 118) just west of the intersection with Orchard Hill Road/Birch Hill Road at 6:15 p.m.

Firefighters needed to remove one person from the vehicle who had suffered serious, life-threatening injuries.

A Life Star helicopter was requested to fly the person to the hospital. However, the helicopter could not fly due to weather conditions, and an ambulance took the person to the Waterbury Hospital.

A second person also suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Waterbury Hospital.

A third person had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Mary's Hospital.

A fluid spill and wet pavement at the scene of the accident made for very slippery conditions, fire officials said. The state Department of Transportation poured sand on the area.

Route 118 was closed between Orchard Hill Road and Route 8 for several hours while crews cleared the accident.

State police are investigating.
