New Sports Anchor Joins CT TV Station

He joins Fox 61 in Hartford from a sister station in Huntsville, Alabama.

CONNECTICUT — A new sports anchor recently joined Fox 61 in Hartford.

Jonah Karp, a Long Island native, joined the station from another TEGNA sister station in Huntsville, Alabama, according to an on-air interview this week. See the video below. (Hat tip to The Laurel, which also reported about the station's new hire)

He earned a bachelor's in science from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and was a play-by-play broadcaster and digital reporter at Stony Brook University before heading to Alabama, according to his LinkedIn profile.

During his tenure at Fox 54 in Huntsville, Karp was a weekend sports anchor, and host of a Sunday night sports show.

And like a lot of Long Islanders, Karp is a fan of New York teams, the Mets, Jets and Knicks.

"I've been a Mets fan my whole life," he said. "My parents were Mets fans, so I grew into that. Jets fan, I actually chose that life myself. When I was 9 years old, I chose to be a Jets fan."

At the time, his mother was a New York Giants fan, but he says that the Giants were hers, so he had to look elsewhere for a favorite football team.

It helps that Karp also likes the color green.
