Significant Long-Duration Storm To Hit CT: Here's When, What To Know

We should all do our best to enjoy the beautiful weather on Monday because it won't last.

We could see rain beginning Monday night, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week as a long-duration storm arrives.

The main concern is "excessive rainfall," and possibly flash flooding. Thunderstorms are also possible both Tuesday and Wednesday, and the storms could be strong or severe, forecasters said.

In a hazardous weather outlook issued for southern Connecticut, the weather service said, "There is a slight risk of excessive rainfall Tuesday into Wednesday as a low pressure system impacts the area. This could lead to localized to scattered instances of flash flooding where the heaviest rain occurs."

US National Weather Service Boston MA, which oversees Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties, said there is "Increasing confidence in a period of heavy rain and isolated to scattered instances of flash flooding Tuesday night into Wednesday. There is still some uncertainty as to where the heaviest rainfall sets up, but the highest exists across urban/poor drainage areas."

US National Weather Service New York , which oversees southern Connecticut, said, "A slow-moving system will bring heavy showers and thunderstorms to the area Tuesday - Thursday. Potential flash flooding is possible Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. There is still a decent amount of uncertainty with this system and where the heaviest rain axis will line up."

Specific weather impacts from the long-duration storm

WFSB 3 TV meteorologists said scattered showers and storms will develop on Tuesday.

"We’ll be watching the potential for some of those storms to be strong or even severe," said WFSB 3 TV meteorologists. "Our biggest concern, however, is heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding. The most probable timeframe for this would be late Tuesday through the day on Wednesday... the Weather Prediction Center has upgraded our area to a Level 2 (out of 4) risk for flash flooding both days. Model guidance is showing the possibility for a widespread 2-3″ of rainfall, but some areas will likely see even higher rainfall amounts as a result of slow-moving storms tracking over the same areas (this phenomenon is known as “training” storms). Wednesday will see the most widespread rain and storm activity, impacting travel and outdoor plans. As the area of low pressure lingers on Thursday, expect scattered showers most of the day."
