These Are The Top 25 Private High Schools In CT, New Ranking Says
In a state famous for its elite private schools, there can be only one No. 1. Here's that school, and 24 more of the best of the best in CT.
CONNECTICUT — Choate Rosemary Hall, in Wallingford, is the best private school in Connecticut, according to the educational platform Niche’s 2024 Best Schools and Districts rankings.
Niche evaluated 30,800 private schools nationwide for its annual rankings, including 1,433 for the first time. Below are the top 25 private high schools in Connecticut, according to Niche:
- Choate Rosemary Hall, Wallingford
- The Hotchkiss School, Lakeville
- The Loomis Chaffee School, Windsor
- Hopkins School, New Haven
- The Taft School, Watertown
- Kent School, Kent
- Suffield Academy, Suffield
- Miss Porter's School, Farmington
- Hamden Hall Country Day School, Hamden
- Pomfret School, Pomfret
- The Frederick Gunn School, Washington
- Greenwich Academy, Greenwich
- Brunswick School, Greenwich
- Pierrepont School, Westport
- Salisbury School, Salisbury
- Avon Old Farms School, Avon
- St. Luke's School, New Canaan
- King School, Stamford
- Kingswood Oxford School, West Hartford
- Westminster School, Simsbury
- The Williams School, New London
- Canterbury School, New Milford
- Greens Farms Academy, Westport

In addition to being tops in Connecticut, Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford ranked third nationwide. The numbers one and two private high schools are Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire; and Princeton International School of Math and Science in Princeton, New Jersey.
Niche said its rankings, now in the ninth year, differ from others that rely almost exclusively on test scores and academic performance in that it also includes input from students, alumni and parents, as well as quantitative data from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate teachers, resources and facilities.

The company said its rankings were created to provide families with valuable information — both quantitative and qualitative — on schools in their area or in a neighborhood they’re not familiar with yet.
As in previous years, the Best Schools rankings include categories for boarding, charter and magnet schools as well as schools for STEM and the arts among many others.
