Severe Thunderstorms Cause Havoc Across Connecticut Thursday

More than 50,000 Connecticut residents are currently without power Thursday evening as severe storms rolled through.

CONNECTICUT — Connecticut got hammered by severe weather Thursday afternoon as three tornado warnings were issued and a tornado watch remains in effect for Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, New London, and Hartford counties until 8 p.m.

The two tornado warnings issued for Litchfield County and one in New Haven County all expired. More than 50,000 power outages have been reported across Connecticut. Several severe thunderstorm warnings were issued throughout the state Thursday afternoon.

Numerous trees and power lines have been knocked over due to the strong wind gusts. (See below for a list of major road closures.)

Severe thunderstorm warning for Fairfield County until 8 p.m. At 7:21 p.m. a severe thunderstorm was located over Ossining, moving east at 45 mph. Storms are producing 60 mph wind gusts and penny size hail.

This severe thunderstorm will be near: Stamford around 7:40 PM, New Canaan and Greenwich around 7:45 PM, and Norwalk and Wilton around 7:50 PM.

Flood advisory impacting Fairfield County until 7:45 p.m.

At 5:49 p.m. radar indicated heavy rain due to training thunderstorms. This will cause urban and small stream flooding. Overflowing poor drainage areas will result in minor flooding in the advisory area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include... Bridgeport, Norwalk, Danbury, Milford, Shelton, Newburgh, New Canaan, Walden, Brewster, Cold Spring, Newtown, Mahopac, Lake
Carmel, West Point and Fairfield.

WATERBURY - Delays. I-84 Westbound is congested between Exits 23 and 20 (2.0 miles). Reported Thursday, August 27 at 2:29 pm.

NORTH HAVEN - Delays. I-91 Southbound is congested between Exits 13 and 9 (4.9 miles). Reported Thursday, August 27 at 5:39 pm.

NORTH HAVEN - Debris (In Roadway) on I-91 Southbound between Exits 10 and 9. The right lane is closed. Reported Thursday, August 27 at 6:02 pm.

STAMFORD - Delays. I-95 Northbound is congested between Exits 4 and 24 (21.7 miles). Reported Thursday, August 27 at 2:18 pm.

GUILFORD - I-95 Southbound is congested between Exits 58 and 55 (4.7 miles) because of Debris (In Roadway) between Exits 56 and 55. The right lane is closed. Reported Thursday, August 27 at 5:12 pm.

BRANFORD - Delays. I-95 Northbound is congested between Exits 51 and 55 (5.1 miles). Reported Thursday, August 27 at 4:25 pm.
