CT Weather: Thunderstorms, Hail In The Forecast Today

Two days ago, we were talking about snow — and now it's thunderstorms and hail.

CONNECTICUT — What a bizarre past couple of days of weather in Connecticut. It snowed in the early morning hours Saturday, and then squalls brought even more snow into the state.

And on Monday, we're talking about thunderstorms and hail. As we know, it's never a dull moment with the weather in New England. It appears the best chance for thunderstorms across Connecticut will be from the midafternoon through the evening rush hour home. The storms are expected to be isolated.

For southern Connecticut, the National Weather Service said a low-pressure system will be responsible for the unsettled weather today.

"A few thunderstorms are possible as well, as the cold front crosses the region this afternoon. The best chance for any thunderstorms will be across southern Connecticut and portions of Long Island," the weather service said. "With plenty of cloud cover, highs this afternoon will only rise into the upper 50s to lower 60s, about 5-10 degrees below normal."

The winds will increase tonight, bringing in colder temperatures for the next few days.

"Overnight lows will range from the mid-to-upper 30s across the interior to around 40 at the coast. Temperatures will remain well below normal despite plenty of sunshine on Tuesday, with highs remaining in the mid-to-upper 50s," the weather service said.

Northern Connecticut forecast details:

The weather service said that the "best chance for storms to become strong to perhaps severe is across northern CT ... This is where enhanced wording for small hail and gusty winds in storms was maintained."

The weather service said the unsettled and potentially stormy weather may arrive between 2 and 5 p.m. in northern sections of the state. Hail is possible here, too, and could be the size of a quarter or ping pong ball, the weather service said.

"Don't think this would necessarily qualify as a severe weather outbreak, but frequent small hail
reports with isolated severe hail/severe wind reports look to be a likely outcome," the weather service said. "Again, the best chance for this is really north and west of I-95, and especially northern CT into central and western MA for this afternoon."
