CONNECTICUT — Though the crowds seemed to be on the mellow side, there was certainly a variety of unique gifts around major and discount retails stores in Connecticut this Black Friday.

The "door buster" deals that would draw shoppers to get to the stores before the sun came up seemed to be few and far between this year. The aisles did not resemble a roller derby match from the 1970s either.

But there were unique gifts galore.

Let's start off at Walmart and two varieties of Elf on the Shelf cereal. (Hide the kids' eyes for a minute). What a perfect thing for the elf to leave behind for the kids after he or she returns to the North Pole. Those living near the coast who prefer a nautical theme can scoop up Cap'n Crunch's Berrytastic pancake mix — The frying pan version of the Crunch Berries cereal, available at Ocean State Job Lot stores.

Oh ... Ocean State also had holiday sleepy pants on sale.

Par For The Porcelain

The discount retail chain store Big Lots may be featuring the most unique gift of the season — "Toilet Golf." It's a mini practice putting green that lets those sitting for a while work on their short games. The box has no mention of marshals banging on the door because of slow play, however. For the assistant greenskeepers among us, next to the Toilet Golf is a rake back scratcher.

An Alien Concept

T.J. Maxx may have had the most interesting board game out there Friday — the Area 51 game. The description is "To escape, you must first break in." There is, however, no mention of the armed guards that usually meet visitors at the fence of the top-secret facility in the Nevada desert.

In A Decorative Mood?

The outdoor decoration section at Home Depot seemed to be the most ravaged Friday. Most of the stuff was cleaned out by mid-morning after being full last weekend, though Star Wars fans still had a shot at a vintage character for the front lawn. A large Mandalorian from the offshoot Disney Plus series was still perched atop the rack at one location. Artificial Christmas tree choices at Big Lots included a rainbow version and Home Goods had a skiing Santa with an air mail bag, but there was no mention of St. Nick was getting big air in the terrain park. Wait ... that bag may have had peanuts in it.

Not Your Grandfather's Sled

What the heck happened to the old wooden Flexible Flyer with the steel runners? Well, according to what was on the Shelf at Ocean State Job Lot, it has been replaced by something called the snow screamer made of foam and plastic.

And Of Course We Have Appliances

OK, Walmart did not seem to have any of those super saver TV bargains that, in years past, prompted shoppers to swoop in like the seagulls at the beach when the bag of chips is opened. But it did seem to have those all-purpose monitors at competitive prices. Home Depot had on sale the perfect bulk freezer for those who are tight on space.
