Torrington High, Middle Schools Dismissed Early Over Social Media Conversation: PD

A police investigation is ongoing, officials said.

TORRINGTON, CT — Both Torrington High and Torrington Middle School were dismissed early today in response to a social media conversation, according to police.

Police and school administration have not yet released any details about the communication or why it prompted the evacuation.

According to police, they were made aware around 8:30 a.m. this morning “of a situation involving Torrington High School that originated from a social media conversation.”

A high school student told a staff member about it. School administrators and the Board of Education were notified, and they decided to dismiss students from the high and middle schools. Other local schools remained in session.

“At this time, no direct threats have been received by the schools,” police said.

Torrington police responded to ensure safety, and they are actively investigating the incident, police said.

In an announcement to families, the school system said there was an “unfortunate situation” which required police involvement.

According to the school system, it decided to conduct an emergency evacuation “out of an abundance of caution.”
