Actors For Witch Trial Program Sought In Avon

The Avon Congregational Church is conducting auditions Sept. 10-11 for an October program about the Salem Witch Trials.

AVON, CT — A local church is looking for acting volunteers to participate in a unique, historical performance about one of New England's most tragic events.

The Avon Congregational Church announced Wednesdaythat it is seeking participants to audition Sept. 10-11 for fall performances of "The Witch Tryal," which will be an interactive witch trial hearing of Susannah Martin in the 1690s.

Martin was one of 14 women executed during the infamous Salem Witch Trials iduring that time period when a hysteria-driven public was accusing women of being witches. She was hanged at 71.

Organizers said actors should display "strong vocal projection and ultra-clear articulation," according to an announcement, with "some improv and independent character development encouraged."

"The script is rooted in a 17th century history context and while taken directly from transcripts, is also highly theatrical," wrote organizers in the announcement.

Those participating will have about four rehearsals before the premier of the showings, which is slated for Oct. 27 and 28 at the historical meetinghouse of Avon Congregational Church.

Auditions at 6 W. Main St. will include reading from the script. However, a one-minute prepared monologue is also welcome, but not required.

Those auditioning can park on the playground side and follow signs.
