A portion of the day's proceeds at a local restaurant will help the trust acquire and maintain properties earmarked for preservation.

AVON, CT — A gourmet Indian dinner will produce more than a full stomach and a satisfying meal on Thursday, July 11.

It might help a local lander preservation organization keep rural portions of Avon and its beloved trails clean and accessible.

The Avon Indian Grill at 320 W. Main St., Avon, is hosting a benefit event on Thursday, July 11, for the Avon Land Trust.

A portion of that day's proceeds — for either dine-in or takeout — will go toward the trust, which owns and manages many properties in town for passive recreation and preservation.

Originally scheduled for late last month, thunderstorms that week and an accompanying power outage on June 27 prompted the event's postponement.

The land trust's mission since it was founded in 1973 is "to conserve and hold in trust the natural resources of the Town of Avon – woodlands, fields, lakes, rivers, open spaces and the plant and animal life living therein."

The goal is to ensure Avon's "rural charm" is preserved for generations to come and to avoid overdevelopment.

It does this by acquiring and managing various properties for the sole purpose of keeping them free of excess development and open to the public.

It is operated and manned by an army of volunteers dedicated to the same ideals as the trust's mission statement.
