Avon Opens Cooling Centers as Heat and Humidity Grip Region

AVON, CT — The Town of Avon has opened cooling centers for residents seeking relief from an extended heat wave expected to affect Connecticut through the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Town officials designated the Avon Senior Center and the Avon Free Public Library as cooling centers beginning Tuesday, June 30, through at least Sunday, July 5.

The Avon Senior Center, located at 635 West Avon Road, will serve as a cooling center Tuesday, June 30, through Thursday, July 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents with questions may call 860-675-4355.

The Avon Free Public Library, located at 281 Country Club Road, will also be available as a cooling center during its regular operating hours through Thursday, July 2. Library hours are available on the library's website. Questions can be directed to 860-673-9712.

Town officials noted that all municipal facilities, including the Senior Center and the library, will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

Officials encouraged residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during periods of extreme heat and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors.

Residents who need access to cooling facilities during the holiday weekend are asked to call the town's non-emergency dispatch line at 860-409-4200 for assistance.
