Avon Seeks Public Help To ID Local Revolutionary War Veterans
Avon's America 250 Committee is collecting names to create an 'Honor Roll' as part of its yearlong celebrations.

AVON, CT — Avon’s America 250 Coordinating Committee is asking residents to help identify local veterans who served in the American Revolution as part of a townwide effort to honor their service.
The committee plans to unveil an Honor Roll plaque in May recognizing Avon residents who fought for independence during the Revolutionary War.
Organizers say more than 50 individuals have already been identified through the work of local historians and community members, but believe additional names remain undocumented.

Organizers said even partial information could help confirm service.
To verify eligibility for inclusion on the Honor Roll, submissions should include as many details as possible, such as full names and known spelling variations, approximate dates of service, military units or commanding officers, rank or role, and supporting documentation.
Acceptable records include enlistment or pension records, muster rolls, Daughters of the American Revolution documentation, tombstone inscriptions, and family records such as letters or Bible entries.
Organizers said residents may also request clarification or arrange to share physical records in person.
The committee is asking that submissions be received by mid-February to allow time for verification and planning ahead of the May ceremony.
Organizers said the project is intended to ensure that the contributions of Avon residents during the Revolutionary War are formally recognized and preserved for future generations.
What to Submit
To ensure historical accuracy, the committee must be able to verify service. Any details will help, including:
- Full name (and known variations in spelling)
- Approximate dates of service
- Regiment, company, or commanding officer (if known)
- Rank or role
- Enlistment records, muster rolls, or pension records
- DAR records
- Tombstone inscription
- Family records
"Even partial information is welcome—sometimes a single clue is enough to confirm service," wrote the committee
