“The win over Canton was a really big one and one we wanted badly. We are now in the driver's seat in the league.” Avon coach Frank Waters said. “Had we lost we'd have been in a three way tie with Canton and Ellington. Our team defense was outstanding.”
Caroline Jadovich continued her stellar season with 24 points, including five 3-pointers against Canton. While Jadovich sparked the offense, it was Canton’s defense that cemented the win.

Waters credited Emily Jordan for doing a great job on Canton star Sarah Benedetti while chipping in seven points and 10 rebounds. Jenna Donahue also came up big defensively and had 14 rebounds.
Chelsea Foster had 7 points with all three of her baskets coming at key times.
The Falcons also posted an easy 59-22 victory over Stafford on Jan.29. Avon jumped out to a 14-1 lead and never looked back.
Wrestling:
The Falcons were dominant in a pair of matches Thursday at home, rolling past Enfield and Suffield.
Avon won 12 matches against Enfield for a final score of 67-12. Eight of the Falcons’ victories were by pin.
The Falcons earned six of their nine wins over Suffield by pin and posted a 61-13 victory.
Avon is now 13-8 on the season and perfect in the NCCC with a 6-0 mark.
Boys basketball:
The Falcons had lost two straight but bounced back and qualified for the state tournament in dramatic fashion with a 54-52 overtime victory over Canton on Friday at Avon High School.
Avon (8-6) was coming off a 48-42 home loss to Granby on Thursday. The Falcons had dropped three of four games since going on a six-game win streak and needed the win over the Warriors to put themselves in the state Class L field.
“We had some things go our way and were getting some breaks and were playing a little more consistently during our win streak, Avon coach Chris Vozzolo said. “We just need to get a win or two, get back on track and regain some confidence.”
Northwest Catholic, Maloney and New London are ranked 1-2-3 in Class L and are all 15-0 this season.
Ice hockey:
The Windsor-East Granby-Avon hockey team is 6-2 overall and ranked sixth in the state D III standings. The Wave is a perfect 4-0 this season against other D III teams.
The Wave have not had a game since Jan. 19 and face E.O. Smith-Tolland-Windham on Monday.
Indoor track:
The Falcons compete in the NCCC championship meet Monday at Hillhouse High School in New Haven.
