February 8th (Tuesday) 730 to 830pm – “The Shady Art of Silhouettes” at Carmon Family Center. The Avon Historical Society will sponsor a talk on the history of the silhouette presented by antiques dealer, appraiser and researcher, Joy Ruskin Hanes of Old Lyme, CT at the Carmon Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon.
This one-hour lecture entitled “The Shady Art of Silhouettes” covers the history of silhouette cutting and painting from the 18th century to the present. Silhouettes are universally popular and few people realize the artistry that is involved in creating them. It is a fascinating subject which even people who aren’t enamored of antiques find interesting!
Hanes will present the history and development of the silhouette in the United States as an art form. She will explain the various methods of producing silhouettes, and how to tell an American silhouette from a British or Continental silhouette.

In particular, Hanes will discuss the rise of August Edouart, the most brilliant of all silhouette cutters and his travels throughout the States, cutting silhouettes of both the rich and famous, as well as more humble citizens. The event is open to the public and free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to bring silhouettes for her to see and talk about after the presentation.
