Earlier this month, voters resoundingly shot down a $116.09 million town/school budget that would have upped taxes by an average of more than 3 percent.
The vote was 299 "yes" votes to 1,378 "no" votes.
Voter turnout exceeded the 9 percent, charter-mandated threshold for a vote to be valid on the budget. It was 12.4 percent.
How those budgets would have impacted individual taxpayers depended on the new, post-revaluation assessments.
The 2024 tax rate was proposed to be 30.34, which is less than the current 35.39 mill rate.
Because of the recently completed revaluation, it doesn't mean taxes would have decreased even though the proposed mill rate would have been much smaller.
The Town of Avon had set up a web page that allowed taxpayers to calculate their tax bill based on that proposed 2024-25 budget going to voters.
What happens next, according to the town, is locked in by the town charter.
As a result, a second budget vote will be held on Friday, June 7, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Avon Senior Center located at 635 West Avon Road.
Absentee ballots will be available in the Avon Town Clerk’s office beginning Wednesday, May 29.
