Historic Homes in Avon

This article describes my Eagle Scout project to digitize records of historic homes in Avon.

Have you ever driven by a beautiful Avon home and wondered how old it was? It could have been a historical home! Avon is home to over 180 historical homes and other landmarks that date back to the 18th century. Over the past couple of months, I have been working to raise the awareness of these homes through my Eagle Scout Project. At the end of last year, I found that a survey of different historical homes in Avon had been done. To my dismay, it was found that this survey existed on a bookshelf in the back of the Avon Library’s History Room, which meant that these documents on the homes were not very accessible. My job has been to digitize these documents to make them available online - 24/7. This job was a very involved process that involved scanning all of the documents, creating folders online for each of the houses, and uploading all of the documents to these folders. In addition, this survey was taken 20 years ago - and the pictures of the homes were all black and white negatives. Another aspect of my project was to take pictures of all of these houses and uploading those as well. Unfortunately, I found that 15-20 of the houses that had been surveyed have since been destroyed, and was then not able to upload these online. All of the documents on the ~180 surveyed homes can be found on http://manage.ctdigitalarchive.org. One more thing - on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at 6:30 pm, at the Avon Library, 281 Country Club Rd., Avon, CT 06001, there will be a party to recognize all of the historical homes and their homeowners!
