Boys Soccer

  • How often do you get to see boys wearing pink? The Avon varsity and junior varsity boys soccer teams teamed up with the girls program this week to organize a . As the girls did Tuesday, the boys are hosting a pink out game against Canton Friday under the lights at 7 p.m. The junior varsity team will play at the high school before at 4:30 p.m., also against Canton. In addition to donations, the boys are auctioning off three pink game balls that will be autographed by the varsity players. Starting bids are $50.
  • After beating East Granby, 4-0 and Ellington, 1-0, last week, the boys had a 4-1 upset Tuesday, losing to . Avon goes into the Canton game with a 9-2-1 season record.

Football

  • Avon High's Homecoming football game will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. under the lights at the high school against Granby Memorial High School (1-3-0).
  • Avon (3-2-0) currently stands fourth record-wise in the Pequot Uncas League, according to ciacsports.com, tied with (3-2-0). Avon lost 20-10 against its rival on Oct. 15. Granby is next behind Avon and Gilbert in the standings.

Field Hockey

  • Avon varsity field hockey is on a roll with four wins since last Tuesday. On Thursday, the girls shut out Enfield 3-0 after also sweeping Simsbury, 2-0 on Monday and and , 8-0 on Tuesday. Avon is undefeated for all 10 of its games this season. The girls also won 4-0 over Stafford on Oct. 11.

Volleyball

  • Farmington swept Avon 3-0 Wednesday, just as Coventry did on Friday. Avon coach Curt Burns called the match the team's "most difficult stretch of the 2011 campaign," losing to rival Farmington (25-12, 25-17, 25-17). Burns said Avon senior setter Mary Pearce (16 assists) had a strong performance, as did hitters Ariel Lepito (seven kills, two blocks), a junior, and Dana Rosato (seven kills, seven digs), a senior.
  • The girls had two wins, sweeping Conard 3-0 last Tuesday and finishing ahead in a close 3-2 match against Bolton Oct. 12.
  • Avon travels to Enfield Friday for a 5:30 p.m. game against its NCCC rival.
  • The girls have a 8-5 record this season. "Now at 8-5, Avon will finish the remainder of the regular season with re-matches against teams they have already defeated earlier in the year," Burns said.

Girls Soccer

  • At its Tuesday at home under the lights, the Avon girls varsity soccer team also held a to "kick out cancer" to benefit the American Cancer Society. Avon shut out Somers 5-0. Senior Erica Primovic had a hat trick. Fellow senior Grace Lennon assisted all three and netted a goal of her own. Senior Olivia Hammick was the third scorer.
  • Avon beat 4-0 last Tuesday and tied Ellington 1-1 on Oct. 13.
  • Going into an away game Friday at 3:45 p.m. against Canton High School, the Avon holds a 10-1-1 season record, according to ciacsports.com.

Girls Cross Country

  • The Avon girls cross country team are competing in the NCCC Championship Tournament in Windsor Locks Friday at 2 p.m.
  • Sophomores Rachael Rosow and Sara Stokesbury once again were toward the head of the pack on Oct. 15 at the Nonnewaug Invitational, running at 6:14 and 6:15 mile paces, respectively. Rosow finished second (19:21) behind Lewis Mills runner Stephanie Deccy and Stokesbury placed third (19:25). Molly Hammel crossed the line in 20:16, putting her in sixth. Avon junior Katie McIntyre (20:39) finished ninth and sophomore Madison Zapatka (21:21) placed 12th.

Boys Cross Country

  • The boys will travel to Windsor Locks Friday for a 2 p.m. NCCC Championship Tournament race.
  • Junior Jeff Demers placed ninth at the Nonnewaug Invitational (17:20). Junior Michael Oberhausen finished in 17:36 to earn 13th place, while junior Justin Alessio (17:56) crossed the line in 17th, senior Tyler McCutcheon (18:13) placed 20th and senior Matt Mascoli (18:27) finished in 24th.
