International Film Series Coming to Avon Library

The Avon Public Library is pleased to announce an international film series this winter/spring. The evening film series will be led by local film expert, Bob Kagan, Professor of Communication at CCSU and University of Hartford. Award-winning films from France, Italy, and South Korea will be introduced and discussed by Kagan on three Thursday nights beginning at 6:30 p.m.:

Thursday, February 25, 6:30 pm
Loose Cannons, Italy, 2010, subtitled, directed by Ferzan Ozpetek, 104 min, unrated, introduction & post film discussion with Bob Kagan.Tommaso is the youngest son of the Cantones, a large, traditional southern Italian family operating a pasta-making business since the 1960s. On a trip home from Rome, where he studies literature and lives with his boyfriend, Tommaso decides to tell his parents the truth about himself. But when he is finally ready to come out in front of the entire family, his older brother Antonio ruins his plans.

Thursday, March 31, 6:30 pm
The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, France, 2008, subtitled, directed by Julian Schnabel, 112 min, rated PG-13, introduction & post film discussion with Bob Kagan. The true story of Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby who suffers a stroke and has to live with an almost totally paralyzed body; only his left eye isn’t paralyzed.

Thursday, April 28, 6:30 pm
The Way Home¸ South Korea, 2002, subtitled, directed by Jeong-hyang Lee, 87 min, rated PG, introduction & post film discussion with Bob Kagan. Seven-year-old Sang-woo is left with his grandmother in a remote village while his mother looks for work. Born and raised in the city, Sang-woo quickly comes into conflict with his old-fashioned grandmother. When Sang-woo’s mother finds work and finally returns for him, Sang-woo has become a different boy.

The film series is sponsored by The Friends of the Avon Public Library. Free and open to the public, registration is not required.
