Man Charged In Hit-And-Run Accident In Avon Involving Bicyclist

The suspect was charged with evading responsibility and two counts of risk of injury to a child, among other charges.

AVON, CT — Local police have charged a motorist in Avon in connection with a hit-and-run incident involving a motor vehicle and a juvenile on a bicycle Friday night.

According to the Avon Police Department, Alex Joel Rivera has been charged with first-degree reckless endangerment; evading responsibility for serious physical injury; operating a motor vehicle without a license; and two counts of risk of injury to a child.

Police did not release an age or hometown for Rivera and his court status was also unavailable.

According to the APD, officers were called to Arch Road near Security Drive to investigate a report of debris in the road at about 9:16 p.m.

"Upon Officer’s arrival, it was determined that a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle that had evaded the scene," wrote the APD. " The bicyclist could not be found at this time. The roadway was temporarily closed to preserve the scene."

Shortly after that, police received a call for a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle near 73

Ultimately, however, police learned the individual was the bicyclist involved in the Arch Road incident.

"With key information being provided by witnesses and the efforts of the Police
Officers on scene, the vehicle was identified and located," police wrote.

This led to Rivera being taken into custody.

The juvenile bicyclist was being treated at Hartford Hospital, but police did not release any information about the bicyclist's condition.

Police said the North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction team is investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, the local community is raising money via a GoFundMe page to help the teen bicyclist's family, as he is reported to be 'fighting for his life.'
