Plans To Dump Canton Dam To Be Unveiled In Avon

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will be in Avon next week to discuss plans to take down a dam in nearby Canton.

AVON/CANTON, CT — State officials will host a special meeting in Avon next week to discuss plans to remove a dam in Canton on the Farmington River.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is hosting the public informational forum at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28.

It will take place in the Avon Community Room in the Avon Public Library, 281 Country Club Road, Avon. This event is not sponsored by the Avon Free Public Library.

The dams hail back to the historic Collins Co. mills, which made axes and other cutting tools for generations before, finally, closing in 1967.

Both dams are now state property and DEEP is looking to remove one of the dams, the lower dam on the river.
