Undocumented Immigrants to Begin Registering for Licenses
Today is the first day undocumented immigrants can sign-up to begin the process of getting a license.

Dec. 1 will be the first day that undocumented immigrants will be able to sign-up for appointments to obtain a Drive Only license.
Undocumented immigrants can sign-up online to take the test, according to a press release. The program is scheduled to start on Jan. 2, 2015.
The state legislature approved the program in 2013 for undocumented immigrants who are 16-years-old or older and can’t establish legal presence in the United States. The license isn’t valid for state or federal identification.

Around the time the law was passed there were an estimated 120,000 undocumented immigrants in the state and about 54,000 would qualify for the program, according to the Hartford Courant.
The aim of the program was to train undocumented immigrants who would be driving anyway.

Obtaining the license is similar to the normal process. Undocumented immigrants have to first get a learner’s permit and eventually take a road skills test.
“We strongly encourage people to study first so they pass the knowledge test the first time. The next phase is a three-month practice driving time to get ready to pass the road test. The actual license is issued after they pass the road test,” said Lynn Blackwell, DMV division chief for licensing.
