AVON, CT — The Town of Avon has a handy, dandy way to chart the town's budget process and how it could, potentially, impact your pocketbook via taxes.

The Town of Avon website has a proposed 2023-24 budget page that details both the latest proposed spending plan, how much it could cost you in taxes and what the next steps are.

According to where the budget stands now, the Avon town manager's recommended budget, which includes both municipal and education spending, is a combined $110.13 million for next fiscal year.

It is an increase of 3.65 percent or $3.88 million more than current spending.

As for how much that would cost you, taxes for real estate and personal property would go from a mill rate of 34.61 to 35.75, a mill rate increase of 1.14.

What does that mean financially for the taxpayer?

If you're home is assessed at $200,000 (70 percent of market value) the tax bill sent to you in the middle of the year would be $228 larger than the tax bill you would have gotten last year.

That tax hike varies depending on the assesesment of your home or property. To calculate that yourself, take your assessment, divide it by 1,000, then multiply it by the mill rate difference (which currently is 1.14).

Voila. Instant tax estimate.

As for motor vehicle taxes, those are capped at the same 32.46 mill rate as a year ago, so if you're vehicle's value hasn't changed, then your tax bill isn't changing either.

Of course, the town manager's proposed budget is just one step in a larger series of steps culminating with voters having the final say at a referendum May 10, so there's plenty of time for spending, as well as the tax bill proposal, to go up or down.
