Berlin Baseball Standout Promoted to Major Leagues

He will join the Colorado Rockies, who are currently 9 1/2 games behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League West Division.

BERLIN, CT — The call of a lifetime has been made to a former baseball star from Berlin High School.

Matt Carasiti, who led the Redcoats to the Class L championship game in 2009, has been promoted to the Colorado Rockies from Triple-A Albuquerque, according to an announcement Friday afternoon by the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats.

The 25-year-old righthanded pitcher has emerged as an ace closer this season. Beginning the season with Hartford in the Eastern League, he saved 29 games in 38 appearances, while recording a 2.31 earned-run average. He pitched in the Eastern League All-Star Game, recording a strikeout to close out a 10-2 victory for the Eastern Division.

Shortly thereafter, he was moved up to Albuquerque, making his Triple-A debut on July 26. In six games with the Isotopes, he hurled seven scoreless innings, striking out five and recording a pair of saves.

Carasiti will wear uniform number 61 for the Rockies, who open a three-game series in Philadelphia Friday.

Colorado is in third place in the National League West, nine and a half games behind San Francisco. The Rockies are also four and a half games behind in the wild card hunt.
