Berlin DUI Checkpoint Leads To 7 Citations

A recent DUI checkpoint effort led to drivers being cited for various infractions.

BERLIN, CT - A recent DUI checkpoint resulted in seven citations on various charges. Police said they stopped roughly 850 vehicles passing through the checkpoint on July 12 on the southbound side of the Berlin Turnpike south of Deming Road.

Seven vehicles that passed through the checkpoint were stopped for DUI testing or other investigative interviews.

  • One motorist was cited for possessing less than Β½ oz. marijuana
  • One motorist was charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance and operating an unregistered motor vehicle
  • Five motorists were cited for operating unregistered motor vehicles
  • Two vehicles were towed
  • No motorists were detained for a DUI/Drug impaired driving assessment

The checkpoint is funded by a state Department of Transportation Highway Safety Division grant intended to bolster DUI enforcement efforts. The program runs from November 2017 to September 2018 and allows municipalities to have 100 percent of overtime costs related to these efforts reimbursed.

Roadside sobriety checks have proven to be the most effective way to combat DUI, according to a statement from police.
