Berlin High's Student Newspaper Wins Major Award

The student newspaper, 'Redcoat Review,' was honored by the Connecticut Associatio of Boards of Education.

BERLIN, CT — Staffers at the Berlin High School student newspaper are celebrating a significant honor bestowed upon them recently from a statewide education organization.

That's because BHS has received a communications award from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) for its student newspaper, the Redcoat Review, in the Newsletter category.

The newspaper, which is written and edited by students, publishes four times a year and covers school, community and national events.

There are approximately 35 students in grades 9 through 12 who make up the staff of the Redcoat Review, which is run as a Berlin High School club that meets after school weekly under the guidance of advisors Lani Jones, social studies teacher; Donielle Joslyn, English teacher; and Rachel Rice, the school’s library media specialist.

"Students brainstorm or pitch story ideas, conduct interviews, write rough drafts, and edit based on feedback from their peers and advisors," wrote the school system in the announcement.

The Redcoat Review is distributed electronically through the school’s content management system, Schoology, for all students and staff.

It is also published on the school’s website along with archived issues.

The Bonnie B. Carney Award of Excellence for Educational Communications is In recognition of the good work being done on a daily basis.

CABE established the Awards of Excellence for Educational Communications in 1975.
