BERLIN, CT β€” As its members do every year, the Berlin Police Department paused Wednesday to pay tribute to a long-fallen officer who gave his life in the line of duty.

Officer Jeffery G. Casner was only 21 in February 1985 when he was struck and killed by a drunk driver as he was tending to an accident scene on the Berlin Turnpike.

He had only been a police officer for three months and is the BPD's only line-of-duty death in its history.

Officers, staff, and Casner's loved ones gathered at his gravesite Wednesday to remember a life cut down much too soon.

"Officer Casner, badge #56, gave his life in the performance of his duties, directing traffic at a motor vehicle accident on the Berlin Turnpike," wrote the BPD in a tribute Wednesday.
